John Milton (1608-1674) was an English poet, scholar, and civil servant. He was born in Bread Street, London, and educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Milton was a strong advocate for the Parliamentarian cause during the English Civil War and served as a secretary to Oliver Cromwell.
